Top 10 Favorite Animal Movies

sika from the Swedish comedy blog Lunki and Sika with an Aaron Sorkin t-shirt standing in front of the American FlagThere have been a lot of bad (or at least not-so-good) movies with animals the last couple of years.  Marmaduke, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Beverly Hills Chihuahua to mention a few.

But there are movies with animals that are great. The movies on this list may not always have the animals starring in them, but they have in all of them played vital parts to their successes.

Janne the director wanted me to put The Expendables on the list and when I tried to explain that it doesn’t have an all animal cast; he started showing me pictures of the actors screaming “WHY CAN’T YOU SEE WHAT I SEE?!

Anyway, here is a top ten list of my favorite animal movies!

10. The Birds [DVD] (1963)
I just re-watched this Hitchcock masterpiece.

It hasn’t aged as well as say Psycho or other no-need-for-special-effects Hitchcock movies; but if you’re looking for animals in a movie, here they are.

Birds. Loads of them!!

9. Planet of The Apes [DVD] (1968)
I am of course talking about the original one from 1968.

If you for some reason instead thought it was the Tim Burton remake from 2001; and was happy about that?

I think you may need help, from professionals.

8. The Fly [DVD] (1986)
A brilliant but eccentric scientist begins to transform into a giant man/fly hybrid after one of his experiments goes horribly wrong. This horror movie is often found high up on top horror movies of all time lists.

Directed by David Cronenberg and starring Jeff Goldblum in the worst haircut ever on film before passing the torch over to Tom Hanks in The Da Vinci Code.

7. Babe [DVD] (1995)
“That’ll do pig. That’ll do”.

..can’t talk now.. ..tearing up..

6. National Lampoon’s Animal House Collectors Ed. [DVD] (1978)
Starring John Belushi and features one of the most famous horse scenes in movie history.

Only beaten by Police Academy and The Godfather.

5. Dances With Wolves [DVD] (1990)
I haven’t seen this one since it came out in 1990. But I remembered it was great enough to win the best picture Oscar and that it had a lot of wolves in it.

And perhaps there was some dancing involved too?

4. Jaws (2 Disc Special Edition) [DVD] (1975)
You can’t fail with a movie that has:

1. A bad ass man-killing shark.
2. Robert Shaw bringing his a-game acting
3. Richard Dreyfuss looking like Radar from M*A*S*H, if Gary Burghoff also would have grown the ugliest beard ever to be featured in a movie.

3. Jurassic Park [DVD] (1993)
As I always try to stay away from trailers and other stuff concerning a movie before I see it, I didn’t know what I was in for when I sat down in the cinema to see “the new Steven Spielberg” movie. I was mesmerized of the effects and couldn’t believe my eyes. Jurassic Park is in the top three of movie-going-experiences for me to date. Fighting for pole position up there with Ghostbusters and Blair Witch Project. Yes, I said it: BLAIR WITCH PROJECT! Deal with it.

2. A Fish Called Wanda (Special Edition) [DVD] [1988] (1988)
One of the greatest comedies of all time. John Cleese proves he is one of the funniest comedians ever. Sure, he later made a not-as-funny “equal” (his words, not mine), Rat Race, and some weird not-funny commercials for a Swedish Company. But I ignore all that and reminisce about the Python/Fawlty Towers years instead.

1. Twelve Monkeys [DVD] [1996] (1995)
This is one of my all time top ten favorites. You have Terry Gilliam directing, Bruce Willis and Madeleine Stowe starring. A crazy-acting Brad Pitt co-starring. Animals roaming the streets: Lions, giraffes, monkeys. Perhaps maybe even more than twelve of them. What’s not to love about that?!
