Once in a while I have movie nights in their honor and yesterday was a “Swayze” night. I re-watched a bunch of his movies and at the end of the night I got inspired to write this list.
These are my Top 10 Favorite Patrick Swayze Movies.
10. Youngblood [DVD] (1986)
Rob Lowe is a talented young hockey player who gets a chance to play with a Canadian minor hockey team where Patrick Swayze is the star.
I used to love this movie, but yesterday I watched this movie for the first time in probably fifteen years. And it sure has aged. I still like it though, but wow how bad and slow that hockey action is. I did NOT remember it that way. In my mind they were pounding each other like in Slapshot and Swayze and Lowe were like Gretzky and Messier. They did not and were not.
Cynthia Gibb in her red long johns was just as adorable I as I remembered though. And Swayze outacts Lowe in the few scenes he’s actually in. Hell, even Keanu Reeves outacts Lowe with the two lines he has in this movie.
9. To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar [DVD] (1995)
Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes and John Leguizamo stars as three drag queens who travel cross-country until their car breaks down, leaving them stranded in a small town.
This movie is not as great as its Australian counterpart The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, but the fact that these actors actually succeeds in dressing up in women’s clothing and making it look convincing, is amazing.
8. 11.14 [DVD] (2003)
This movie follow the events leading up to an 11:14 PM car crash, from five very different perspectives.
I think this movie is considered a rare movie because I don’t know anyone else who has seen it. I think this movie could have been a contender for Janne the Director’s 100 Favorite Rare Movies list, but I don’t think he has seen it either.
Yes, it might be that rare! I’m not even sure how I ended up watching it. It wasn’t because I knew Swayze was going to be in it, but it might be because I knew Hilary Swank was.. I can’t remember, but I remember how much I loved it. It was smart, suspenseful and funny. Has any of you seen it?
7. The Outsiders [Blu-ray] (1983)
Before any one knew of them, director Francis Ford Coppola gathered a bunch of talented young actors and made a gang movie with them.
This is where it all started for C. Thomas Howell, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez and Tom Cruise. A few years later all of them would be movie stars.
It’s not the greatest movie ever made, but it’s fun to watch all these future stars act together and it’s even more fun to see some of them try to act tough. Yes, Ralph Macchio, I’m talking about you.
6. Red Dawn [DVD] (1984)
Patrick Swayze leads a group of teenagers to defend their town, and their country, from invading communist forces.
This movie is actually quite unrealistic when you think about it; C Thomas Howell, Charie Sheen, Lea Thompson, Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze fighting against the commies and kicking their ass? I guess that is what is known as movie magic, because I believe it. And love every second of it!!
5. Donnie Darko [Blu-ray] (2001)
I have no idea what the hell this movie was about.. but Swayze was awesome in it!
4. Road House [DVD] (1989)
Swayze plays Dalton, a tough bouncer who is hired to tame a dirty bar. This movie has taught me three things:
1. Fighting is cool.
2. Having a Swayze hair-do (sometimes also called a Siegfried and Roy hair do) attracts the ladies.
3. If the hair-do is not enough, wearing your pants higher than everyone else will seal the deal with the most beautiful girl in town.
3. Ghost (2 Disc) [DVD] (1990)
After Patrick Swayze gets killed during a botched mugging, his love for Demi Moore enables him to remain on earth as a ghost.
This movie made me take up pottery.
2. Point Break [Blu-ray] (1991)
Keanu Reeves plays an FBI agent who goes undercover to catch a gang of bank robbers who may be surfers. The leader of the surfers is Patrick Swayze.
A friend used to have this movie as his “fall-asleep-to”-movie. This was before DVD’s, and every night he popped in a video-cassette, pressed play and fell asleep. I asked him once how many times he’d seen it and he told me ‘hundreds’. I then asked him how many times he’d watched it all the way through, he said ‘a couple’.
Three awesome things about this movie: Swayze, the direction by Kathryn Bigelow and the fact that Gary Busey is not playing a crazy, bad guy.
“I carried a watermelon”.. adorable!!
