Janne the Director’s Top 10 Best TV Shows of 2011

December 15, 2011

Yeah, I have been watching TV a lot more than movies this year but still: not that many new shows. I’ve had a phase where I’ve watched old Saturday Night Live episodes, The Munsters and Mission Impossible. I believe I wrote something about it before… in 2010.

You will quickly notice the absence of shows like Game of Thrones (because it feels like the plot is decided by a nerd with a dice), 30 Rock (that I loooove but it’s not new anymore) and Swedish shows (because Swedish shows still haven’t figured out how to make drama).

Anyways! These are the best NEW shows I’ve watched 2011:the animated comedy series and blog lunki and sika

1. Homeland

It takes a hybrid of “24” and Susanne Bier’s Brødre (Brothers) to get me out of my Damian Lewis-closet. He usually comes off as a talking ginger Easter Island head but not here. And my love for Claire Danes has been kept a secret ever since Terminator 3 but finally I can say that I like them both.the animated comedy series and blog lunki and sika

2. Sports Show with Norm Macdonald

Everybody who knows me knows that I know nothing about sports except naming sport athletes who gotten away with murder, rape or drug use. But as a huge Norm Macdonald fan I watched this religiously and didn’t need any sport knowledge at all to enjoy the show… until those fuckers cancelled it.the animated comedy series and blog lunki and sika

3. Fresh Meat

I haven’t watched Peep Show yet but I better give it a shot since I loved this. It’s like watching a house full of… us.the animated comedy series and blog lunki and sika

4. Portlandia

I bet there isn’t a town in the world that doesn’t say; ”oh it’s JUST like my hometown!”. Even though most of the characters Fred Armisen plays on Saturday Night Live have been killed this year it’s comforting to know that he got more of them – and that they are not all crazy dictators.the animated comedy series and blog lunki and sika

5. The Trip

A show about Steve Coogan and some guy I barely recognize on a trip through the English country side – eating food. Great concept since, as you might already know, I love Steve Coogan. And I love trips. But I hate food. Not just English food but any kind of food. You can blame religion as much as you want but I believe that if all of mankind quit eating we would have world peace within a few weeks.the animated comedy series and blog lunki and sika

6. Boss

Fraiser dying… slowly… Of course I’m watching that! The pilot direct by Gus van Sant didn’t hurt either!the animated comedy series and blog lunki and sika

7. American Horror Story

I should really, really, really, really, really, really, REALLY hate this. It’s trying way too hard to be scary and fails 9 times out of 10 because they edit it like this:

Somebody [QUICK BOO CUT!] walks into [QUICK BOO CUT!] the room [QUICK BOO CUT!] and [QUICK BOO CUT!] yawns [QUICK BOO CUT!] [QUICK BOO CUT!].

There are more ghosts in the show than there is living breathing characters that should just MOVE THE FUCK OUT OF THAT HOUSE! But… I’m intrigued anyway. Jessica Lange is a fun drunk GMILF and there are some fun twists and turns plotwise.the animated comedy series and blog lunki and sika

8. New Girl

Fell in love with this from the start but after a few episodes the cute quirkyness kind of morphed into dumb and annoying. Still got it’s moments though.the animated comedy series and blog lunki and sika

9. Up All Night

…is very ”meh” most of the time but I follow it anyway because now and then we get a crazy awesome Will Arnett and that third episode with Will Forte was so great that I hope for a second fix like that…the animated comedy series and blog lunki and sika

10. Allen Gregory

I admit I pretty much just added this to make this a full Top 10-list… I have watched a lot more but these are the ten new shows I actually follow. Allen Gregory is a bit too much full of itself which can be FINE if you got something to say.the animated comedy series and blog lunki and sika

I almost added Beavis and Butt-Head to the list… I knoooow it’s old but I feel that the 14 year break the show took makes it okay for me to add this – but rules are rules if they are my rules. I hated the old show (but oddly enough loved the movie) and (also oddly enough) like the new one. That episode where Christian dumfucks explain to them that they don’t have to learn things in school that is too complicated (like evolution) is so good I wanted to lick it.

My absolute favorite this year is actually a Swedish show investigating the Swedish school system called Världens Bästa Skitskola (The World’s Best Crap School). It’s like a healthy mix of the good parts of Michael Moore and Spurlock mixed with The Wire. Yeah – THAT good. It’s entertaining AND pisses you off at the same time.

I got a big laugh out of this: “You will quickly notice the absence of shows like Game of Thrones (because it feels like the plot is decided by a nerd with a dice)”

The funny thing is, I’d avoid anything that nerds with dice will endorse. But I was impressed by Game of Thrones. It’s my favorite new show.

Nerds are the new black (president) and Game of Thrones IS impressive, I have a huge Lena Headey-fetish and the thing is crawling with bearded drunks and prostitutes but STILL it doesn’t tickle my fancy.

I watch a lot of TV – alright too much TV – and I’ve not heard of most of your list – there is just too much TV in the world is all that I can conclude from that.

So I’m just going to reply with a list of my favourite British TV of the year which you probably haven’t heard of and don’t worry about it!

Life’s Too Short, Friday Night Dinner, Misfits, Skins, Silk, Monroe, Sirens, Luther, Scott & Bailey and Him & Her – yes these really do exist I am not just making up words!

Awesome! I have watched 2 episodes of Life’s Too Short and dug the first a lot and the second was okay but it was still not enough to make the list. Been meaning to check out Misfits and Skins but the rest of the list: I still think you just made those up. Sober up, man!

Fraiser dying… slowly… Best pitch I ever heard for a TV series, now I have to watch it!

But what about Life’s Too Short?

    • December 16, 2011 10:59

It could make an updated list if I manages to see a few more episodes in the near future.

Hm… How about this pitch for a new Lunki and Sika pilot: “Sika dying… slowly.”?

      • December 16, 2011 10:59

        I like that.. a lot!
