September 12, 2011

29. Beverly Hills Cop [DVD] (1984)

Plot: Detroit cop Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) get a visit from old friend Mikey Tandino (James Russo), who lives in California and works for an art dealer called Victor Maitland (Steven Berkoff). When Mikey gets killed, Axel decides to go on “vacation” and traces the killers to Beverly Hills. After being thrown out of Maitland’s office and being arrested by the police, Lieutenant Andrew Bogomil (Ronny Cox) assigns Detective Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and Sergeant John Taggart (John Ashton), to keep an eye on Axel; which is easier said than done.

This is not my locker.

Review: I have no idea what happened to director Martin Brest, but I suspect Hollywood had him assassinated after Gigli, since no-one heard of him since 2003.

Too bad. Understandable, but still.. too bad, I was hoping for Scent of a Woman 2.

Oscar Count
1 Nomination: Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen (Daniel Petrie Jr. (screenplay/story) Danilo Bach (story))

Anyway.. Eddie Murphy!! Yeah, I know, it’s like it’s been Eddie Murphy week here at the blog lately, but who would have guessed his announcement to host the Oscars would coincide with me posting two of his movies on my Greatest Movies of All Time list?

And as a review I could as well copy paste whatever I wrote for Trading Places, you know “this movie was made way back when Eddie still was funny, talented and black”. Way before Norbit and the Disney lobotomy he went through right about then. …I actually liked him in Imagine That though.. which was made by Paramount.. which google tells me is NOT owned by Disney.. Phew!!

Sidenote: While googling Paramount I just read they are making “How to train your Dragon 2”. So, the first one didn’t do the trick then?

Okay, enough with my hilarious jokes and back to the review of this movie. As you might have seen, the link in the beginning of this post doesn’t only lead to Beverly Hills Cop, but to the entire trilogy. And the reason for that is a) the dvd box is insanely cheap and b) even though the greatness of the movies deteriorate with each installment, the sequels are quite entertaining too, and c) it’s fun too see Judge Reinhold go from looking good to looking like his plastic surgeon allowed his kids to play with Judge’s face like it was Play-Doh.

Nerdiest Movie Trivia: Axel Foley was originally going to be played by Sylvester Stallone or Mickey Rourke. Stallone left the project and used some of his script ideas to make Cobra. Other actors who were considered for the role of Axel Foley were Al Pacino and James Caan.

PREVIOUS ON THE LIST: 30. Goodfellas (1990)

You do realize your 2011 picture of Judge Reinhold is not of Judge Reinhold right? This would be a 2011 picture of Judge Reinhold http://www.aceshowbiz.com/events/Judge%20Reinhold/judge-reinhold-spike-tv-s-5th-annual-2011-01.html The picture you have up is Jason Segel, who plays Marshall in “How I met you mother.”
