We have Beards so we know Movies: Catfish (2010)

September 6, 2011

Catfish is a documentary that circles around Yaniv “Nev” Schulman who works as a photographer in New York. One day he receives a painting that is a replica of a photograph of his that had been published in New York Times.

The painter is Abby, an eight-year-old girl and he starts to have contact with her and her mother Angela trough Facebook and phone calls. Everything is great, new paintings keep arriving in the mail and he even start a long-distance online relationship with Megan, Angela’s other daughter. But everything is not what is seems to be..

Catfish is an extremely interesting film. Unfortunately I think that the trailer can give you the wrong impression. It implies that it is some kind of thriller with quotes like “The best Hitchcock film Hitchcock never directed”. It is really about love and betrayal and to question what is real and what’s not in a world that is getting more and more “online”.

Ironically there is a lot of discussions if the documentary itself is real or not. I don’t think that’s important. All documentaries are more or less arranged, and I believe that the base of Catfish is a true story. However, what’s very interesting is that it tells us something about the world we live in right now.

I find the theme very interesting. For example, how do you know that I am for real? Maybe I have a fake Facebook account, false Twitter account and a fake blog using the alias Lunki?

Just kidding, don’t worry, I am for real! But our intern on the other hand, Johnny the Intern, he is so retarded that I can’t believe he is for real sometimes.

Watch Catfish and let me know what you think! And If you live in Sweden you can see it tonight at 10PM on SVT. Don’t miss it!
