Review: Remember “Mr. Mike’s Mondo Video”,  “It’s Pat”,  “Superstar”, “The Ladies Man” and “Stuart Saves His Family”?

No? Me neither.

To make the transition from popular Saturday Night Live skit to popular movie is hard. Many have failed totally and some have failed a little. I personally like “A Night at the Roxbury” and “Coneheads” but I fear I’m pretty alone in that.

“Wayne’s World” is the one who has succeeded the best. It’s the only SNL spin-off movie to date (including The Blues Brothers (1980)) that has grossed over $100 million.

And it’s easy to understand why when the movie contains likable characters, high joke-frequency, numerous catchphrases, movie and TV spoofs and a bunch of fun celebrities in cameos and bit parts, like; Meat Loaf, Robert Patrick, Alice Cooper, Ed O’Neill and Charlton Heston.

Favorite Quote:
Garth Algar: [Holds out a Dixie cup] Hey Phil, if you’re gonna spew, spew into this.

But this isn’t just a “fun” movie, there are also lessons to be learned. Like:

1. We learn Rob Lowe isn’t just a pretty face, he is damn funny too.

2.
The pretty girl sometimes choose the ugly guy over the good-looking guy.

3.
Brian Doyle Murray is not Bill Murray’s father, he’s his older brother. Actually Wayne’s World didn’t help me on that one, I had to google it because I’ve always wondered.
4. Even though Lara Flynn Boyle’s character Stacey is mental, I’d still find her very attractive. So I guess the lesson is; insanity isn’t all that bad.

5.
Just because you’ve made a hit movie doesn’t mean you have to make a sequel. Yeah, I’m talking to you Wayne’s World! ..and Blues Brothers.. and Blair Witch Project.. and Sex and the City.. and.. Well, I better stop or this could turn into the longest blog post ever… And Porky’s. Damn it, I can’t stop..

Nerdiest Movie Trivia: Wayne’s slang proved a challenge for translators in foreign countries. The line “And monkeys might fly out of my butt!” was translated into Spanish as “When Judgment Day comes” (Cuándo llegue el día del juicio).

And speaking of SNL spin-off movies, when are we going to see ex-presidents Bush Sr. (Dana Carvey), Bill Clinton (Darrell Hammond) and Bush Jr (Will Ferrell) team up for an adventure? Throw in Bob Dole (Norm MacDonald) and we could have a Fantastic Four kind of super hero gang franchise brewing.

Or why not a Cocoon threequel??

But once again I’m getting beside the point. Wayne’s World is a very funny movie. Sure it’s low brow and silly at times, but it’s “low brow GOOD” and “silly GOOD”, so it’s okay. And if the lessons I listed earlier doesn’t make you want to watch it, I bet the fact that it contains the film debut of the late Chris Farley does. Or else you’re a cold hearted person and I hope monkeys DO fly out of your butt. Big ones. Maybe chimpanzees. So there, point made. See it.

Oscar Count: Nothing. Not even a nomination. They did however win best comedy duo on MTV Movie Awards in 1992.

PREVIOUS ON THE LIST: 91. Three Men and a Baby (1987)

This is just like Lunki & Sika.

Minus the gross revenue-part. (Well, at least the “revenue” part.)
