Brain Dead Germans. No, I mean Romans!

June 22, 2011

In a paper published in the official journal of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies, German scientists have made out a detailed analysis of the 700 head injuries suffered by characters in the 34 Asterix comic books.

In the paper, the two gauls; Asterix and his sidekick Obelix are reported to have caused half of those damages and mostly against Roman soldiers; often leaving them with outstretched tongues and amnesia but never dead.

The researchers, lead by Marcel Kamp at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf, concluded:

We set out to analyze the epidemiology and specific risk factors of traumatic brain injury in the Asterix illustrated comic books and the favourable outcome is astonishing, since outcome of traumatic brain injury in the ancient world is believed to have been worse than today and also since no diagnostic or therapeutic procedures were performed.

I didn’t understand all of that but.. I’m just happy to see scientists focusing on the more important stuff in life, now that cancer and AIDS has all been dealt with.
