Janne the Director’s Favorite Rare Movies Top 100 List #3: The Devils (1971)

This might very well be one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. Who knew that if you mix Ken Russell, nuns, witch-hunters and Derek Jarman you would get a narrative Greenaway movie?!

But it’s hard to judge because the only version I have seen is a downloaded copy of a bootleg VHS in poor quality since Warner Brothers are pussies and don’t dare to release the movie on DVD or BluRay. Not even when they announced their “Warner Brothers Archive Collection” that would include all their movies!

It is a controversial but GREAT movie that won the Venice Film Festival even though it was banned in Italy. You know how hard that is? It’s like climbing Mount Everest while you are in Sweden.

And is this just the 2nd time Oliver Reed makes this list? Weird. Feels like he could’ve easily made it with at least 3-4 other movies as well.

But until I get my hands on tickets to a screening of a restored edition of The Devils or hugging a DVD/BluRay with it restored on I will wait until I can officially announce this as “the best movie I’ve ever seen”.

PREVIOUS ON THE LIST: 4. Come and See (1985)
