Janne the Director’s Favorite Rare Movies Top 100 List #39: Sisters (1973)

I don’t like movie reviews that says “I didn’t understand it. But I loved it”.

Especially when it’s said in a way that states “not understanding a movie is good in itself”. That’s just as weird as stating; a movie is “good” when you understand what it is about.

Well, I didn’t understand everything here but I was totally emotionally involved and Brian De Palma‘s talent of suspense and playfulness had me holding my breath at times.

It’s 100% De Palma with influences from Hitchcock and all. Some are bothered by that but since I’m no fan of the old ‘cock it doesn’t bother me when it’s done right for once.

He has done this kind of movie about dual identities, voyeurism and kitsch over and over since then (Blow Out, Body Double, Obsession, Dressed to Kill and so on) but he still manages to surprise me every time and pull the rug away from underneath my feet.

He even managed to make Margot Kidder look hot – specially with her cute French accent (probably used as a device to make her craziness more realistic). Such a great movie…

I didn’t understand it. But I loved it.
