Janne the Director’s Favorite Rare Movies Top 100 List #49: Stuart Little (1999)

April 9, 2011

The Director of the Animated Comedy Series Lunki and Sika Janne the Director49. Stuart Little [DVD] (1999)

Yeah, I know… A movie that is one of the 250 biggest blockbusters in the world shouldn’t be on a list with the words “rare movies” in the title. But I find it rare to meet people who actually SEEN it!

Is it one of those movies that bad parents buy to their kids to keep them busy? “Yeah… talking rat… The kids will love that.”

I love movies for kids and especially when they are fun, adventurous and got heart. And I just LOVE how Stuart’s adoptive parents don’t see him just as a mouse – all they see is a son. A son that their cat can play with.

It’s a showcase of the greatness of Michael J Fox even though we “only” get his voice in this. I wish he could do more. I’ll go on record to say that I consider him to be one of the best PHYSICAL comedy actors since Buster Keaton. His timing was always flawless. But if you only get a chance to hear his voice you should take it – no questions asked (unless you are Rush Limbaugh).

Geena Davis looks mannish but gets away with it, Hugh Laurie is Hugh Laurie before he started faking an American accent and a 3 day beard and the script is co-written by M. Night Shyamalan … NO WAIT! COME BACK! I promise you this is the M. Night that wrote scripts that made producers go “this guy can make great movies- let’s let him make whatever he want!” and not the M. Night that… does whatever he wants.

PREVIOUS ON THE LIST: 50. Wake Up, Ron Burgundy: The Lost Movie (2004)
