I really really REALLY don’t like Sam Neill.

He is to me the image of a shitty actor, stiff and uncharismatic who only got two acting skills: Getting acting jobs and the ability to sweat on command. As soon as any of his characters gets under some kind of pressure his incredibly stiff not-British upper lip gets shiny. And that’s it.

Seriously, watch any movie with Sam Neill and you’ll see that’s the only thing he got going for him.

Sam! Your penis is on fire!” Cut to: Sam Neill with a sweaty upperlip.

With that said: he is amazing in In the Mouth of Madness. Yeah, I hate to admit it but I love him in this. He is a cocky son of a bitch that balances his performance between icons as Humphrey Bogart and Bruce Campbell.

As soon as Sam isn’t in a scene the movie slows down but even those parts are great because this is a movie by the John Carpenter that made The Thing, Halloween and Escape from New York and not the one that made Memoirs of an Invisible Man, Ghosts of Mars or Escape from L.A.

Depending on how good John Carpenter’s upcoming The Ward turns out to be this movie is his last hooray as a great director and it’s such a sad thing that not enough people have seen it.

PREVIOUS ON LIST: 54. The Curse of the Cat People (1944)
