Janne the Director’s Favorite Rare Movies Top 100 List #73: The Secret Lives of Dentists (2002)

When you do it right ANYTHING can be suspenseful. This makes Hitchcock look like a hack and all it takes to lit the fuse is the questionable assumption that Campbell Scott’s wife is having an affair. And then let the family get struck by… the flu!

Yes, one of the most suspenseful dramas I know is about a jealous dentist that has to take care of his dentist wife and their three kids while they have… the flu. Yeah, Hitchcock – it doesn’t have to be about “muuuurduuur”.

The great cast surely helps: Campbell Scott will never be his father (google it) but why should he? His dad would suck in the parts Campbell fits for. And if anybody still doesn’t get the greatness of Hope Davis I pity the fool. Because then you’re a fool. That I pity. Denis Leary is great here too but I honestly wish that his character, the smoking and swearing conscience of Campbell Scott, was cut. Denis Leary was born for the part but the part is superflouous.

PREVIOUS ON THE LIST: 74. Hoffman (1971)
