I have a confession to make: I’m no fan of Alan Arkin

I like him but I have no idea how he got into the business. He seems like the kind of guy who would do a movie once and then disappear into oblivion without really leaving a mark. But he’s been around for a long time! And… I kinda dug him here.

He fits great with a James Caan in his prime – and his prime ended in 1981 with Michael Mann’s Thief (and yes I know he did Misery later but his PRIME beats the shit out of that performance).

The movie is really just those two bickering and some car chases here and there. But the bickering is awesome… and the car chases too. Usually these things feel like they are shot on restricted closed of streets but here they got extras, and PLENTY of them, that looks REALLY fucking surprised when cars crash beside them and the way it’s shot makes me think that they did it with candid cameras sometimes… but the stunts are way too fucking complex. Actually any chase in this movie is great, even when they are just by foot.

God, I love good buddy action movies… I wish they had done like 10 Freebie and the Bean movies!
