Janne the Director’s Favorite Rare Movies Top 100 List #87: Payday (1973)
87. Payday [DVD] (1973)
You know Rip Torn? The guy who’s Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones’ boss in the Men In Black movies? Yeah, that guy from Dodgeball…
Anyways: he used to be AWESOME! Nuttier than Charlie Sheen without coke but WITH charisma.
We have all seen Nicolas Cage rip it up in movies like The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call – New Orleans or Vampire’s Kiss, right? Fuck that very entertaining “tongue in cheek” actor.
Rip fucking Torn shows how you truly rip things up in here! There’s nothing he won’t fuck, smoke, drink, alienate or throw a shit-eating grin at. I’m floored. What Rip Torn got and what Nicolas Cage is lacking is a genuine character and isn’t just there to underline the freaky sides of things.
There is so much more going on here besides the leading man and it keeps surprising me, throughout the entire movie. Like a naive groupie saying she never had an omelet!
Only negative thing I got to say about this is that I have no idea what Crazy Heart is about but after seeing this I have filled my quota for “awesome actors doing country singers”-films. This could be my all time favorite road movie…
