Mikael Persbrandt is The Hobbit’s Beorn

January 2, 2011

Sika is celebrating his birthdayA while back i wrote about Swedish actor Mikael Persbrandt being cast in Peter Jackson’s 2012 The Lord of the Rings prequel, The Hobbit: Part 1. I guessed that he would be playing “some intense, macho tough guy with a short temper”. Now it’s been announced that he will be playing Beorn. I think my guess was pretty spot on.

Beorn is a huge, strong man who lives alone with his animals in a wooden house between the Misty Mountains and Mirkwood, to the east of the Anduin. Oh, and he’s a shape-shifter and can transform into a great black bear. I predict some awesome cgi effects. And hopefully better ones than in the remake of the Wolfman and those disappointing Twilight movies.

I also predict that this will be Mikael Persbrandt big international break-though and he will reach the popularity of other Swedish “bear” stuff known to the world. (ie. Bear is Björn in Swedish and Beorn in Tolkienese). Like:

  • Baby Bjorn. Seems like every parent nowadays carries their babies in one of these.
  • Björn Borg. Legendary tennis player with awesome hair.
  • Peter, Bjorn and and John. Famous musician.
  • Bjorn Ulveaus from ABBA. Superstar with amazing beard.
