My Top 12 Favorite Christmas Movies

Sika wearing a Santa Claus hatThere are a few things you traditionally do over the Christmas holiday; you over-eat, you get presents and you spend time with your family in front of the TV watching movies. The movie-watching holiday starts the day before Christmas and ends on New Years Day.

Here’s my list of movies to watch during that holiday. And if you expect National Lampoon’s Cristmas Vacation 2: Cousin Eddie’s Island Adventure to be on the list, you can stop reading now.

This list is not for you.

Tim Burton's the nightmare-before-christmas movie poster12. The Tim Burton Double Feature Package: The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Jack Skellington (voiced by Chris Sarandon and Danny Elfman) king of Halloweentown, discovers Christmas Town, but doesn’t quite understand the concept. Before being struck by Hollywood Amnesia and making unnecessary remakes, Tim Burton made wonderful movies. The soundtrack is lovely and the characters are scary. All in all a must-see the night before Christmas.

edward-scissorhands-johnny-depp11. and Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Edward Scissorhands (Johnny Depp), an uncommonly gentle young man, who happens to have scissors for hands, falls in love with a beautiful teenage girl (Winona Ryder). My favorite Tim Burton movie and Johnny Depp performance. Known for Vincent Price‘s last screen appearance.

scrooged bill murray movie poster 198810. Scrooged (1988)
A cynically selfish TV executive (Bill Murray) gets haunted by three spirits bearing lessons on Christmas Eve. Made back in 1988 when Bill Murray made funny movies and people knew who Bobcat Goldthwait was. It’s funny, well-acted and tear-jearking. And like every comedy from the eighties it has a Jamie Farr cameo and a sports star cameo (usually Kareem Abdul Jabbar even though this time it’s gymnast Mary Lou Retton).

die-hard_bruce_willis movie poster 19889. Die Hard (1988)
New York cop John McClane (Bruce Willis) gives terrorists a dose of their own medicine as they hold hostages in the Nakatomi Plaza office building on Christmas Eve. The movie made Bruce Willis the king of one-liners and made the use of a wife-beater seem cool. It also stars Alan Rickman as Hans Grüber in one of the best bad guy performances of all time.

national_lampoon_christmas_vacation_chevy_chase8. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)
Clark Griswold’s (Chevy Chase) plans for a big family Christmas predictably turn into a big disaster. Chevy Chase last funny performance before being not funny for twenty-one years and then making a triumphant funny return in Community. Sure, some may say he was funny in Memoirs of an Invisible Man from 1992, but was he? Was he really?

home_alone_macauly_culkin_joe_pesci_daniel_stern movie poster7. Home Alone (1990)
Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin), an eight year-old, who is accidentally left behind while his family flies to France for Christmas, has to defend his home against idiotic burglars (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern). Known as one of the highest grossing comedies of all time and for spawning a “Elvis Presley is not dead” legend. Many of those who believe that Elvis is still alive maintain that, the heavily bearded man standing in the background of the scene where Mrs. MacCallister is shouting at the desk clerk (just before she meets John Candy in a lovely cameo) is Elvis. The rest of us don’t.

the_santa_clause_movie_poster_tim_allen6. The Santa Clause (1994)
When Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) inadvertently kills Santa on Christmas Eve, he finds himself magically recruited to take his place. Before people started hating Tim Allen, he made quite a few funny movies. Alongside Galaxy Quest and the Toy Story franchise, The Santa Clause is my favorite one. It’s funny AND it has a message. Sure, I hate when they put one in, especially in Christmas movies but when it’s in a movie starring a reluctant Santa it’s fine by me.

bad_santa_billy-bob-thornton_sexy-lauren_graham_movie_poster5. Bad Santa (2003)
A miserable conman (Billy Bob Thornton) and his partner pose as Santa and his Little Helper to rob department stores on Christmas Eve. But they run into problems when the conman befriends a troubled kid, and the security boss discovers the plot. And speaking of messages in movies; in this one the message is “It’s okay to make fun of fat kids”. I love the holidays! And Lauren Graham in sexy getup..

while-you-were-sleeping-sandra-bullock-movie-poster4. While You Were Sleeping (1995)
Ticket collecting romantic Lucy (Sandra Bullock) pretends to be engaged to an unconscious man (Peter Gallagher) but can’t fool his brother (Bill Pullman). Originally written to be played by Demi Moore, luckily it ended up being the breakthrough for Sandra Bullock that charmed us to the brink of wanting to get out and try to get into comas ourselves.

gnomes-movie-poster-trolltyg-i-tomteskogen 19803. Gnomes (1980)
A family of gnomes preparing for the wedding of their oldest son must engage in a battle of wits with an enemy family of vicious trolls. Best known in Sweden under the name Trolltyg i Tomteskogen. It’s quite popular here in Sweden, but due to its unclear copyright status (after the production company shut down) further viewing was deemed impossible by Swedish Television until the status was resolved. For years this popular TV movie couldn’t be aired until it made its triumphant return this Christmas after being off the air since 1989.

planes-trains-and-automobiles-steve martin and john candy 1987 movie-poster2. Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987)
Neal Page (Steve Martin) must struggle to travel home for Thanksgiving, with an obnoxious slob of a shower ring salesman (John Candy) as his only companion. Sure, it’s about thanksgiving, but who cares? It has a lot of snow in it and it could as well be about trying to get home for Christmas. It’s the funniest road-movie ever made. Yeah, I am talking to you Due Date.

when_harry_met_sally_meg_ryan_billy_crystal_movie_poster1. When Harry Met Sally (1989)
Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) are confronted with the problem: “Can a man and a woman be friends, without sex getting in the way?” Alongside The Blues Brothers and aforementioned “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” it’s the movie I’ve seen most times. And even if the full frontal Meg Ryan nudity was still years away this movie has everything else; great acting, dramatic moments, fun moments and fake orgasms. Directed by Rob Reiner it’s the number one movie to watch over the holidays.
