Janne the Director’s Top 10 Best Movies of 2011
I didn’t see that many movies this year… At least not that many new ones. Been watching mostly TV, old movies and youtube clips. But here is my top 10 anyway.
Note that I haven’t seen Fincher’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy or The Muppets yet.![]()
1. Drive
It made my pants want to invite Gosling to a sausage fest. Al Brooks can come too if he promises to just watch. Creepy fuck.![]()
Yeah, we got to see it here in Sweden while America is still waiting. This can only be because American distributors are slightly smarter than Swedish distributors (more about that later). Their reason for waiting in the states is that Yanks don’t know about Tintin. Who cares! It’s a Spielberg movie! Nobody knew about E.T. or Indiana Jones either but I’ve heard they made a few bucks anyway. And I have to say 2011 is Andy Serkis year… his Haddock is so awesome it’s like looking into a mirror.![]()
3. Black Swan
Yeah, this didn’t make it to Sweden until 2011. Why? Because distributors in Sweden does this thing where they wait with premiers on certain films until after the award season so everybody have already seen them through illegal downloads. That way they can later claim that when they show quality film nobody comes to the cinema while movies like that Bieber film and other instant classics hits the big screens faster than a Kardashian divorce. But at least they can spend extra money on new posters that says “Oscar Winner!”.![]()
4. Happy End
Haha! Movies about depressed Swedes are awesome.![]()
5. Sykt Lykkelig (Happy, Happy)
Sorry to all of you who only wanted American blockbusters on this list. This is a Norwegian film about extremely charming people that doesn’t steal butter. You know how somebody can be so freakishly charming that you just kind of have to hate them? This is a movie about one of those people and it manages to show a different side to happy people: they can be nice. It also has the best AIDS-gag ever made.![]()
6. Apflickorna (She Monkeys)
A Swedish movie about teenage girls who is competing in some lame horse contest and not a single monkey in the entire movie! Total rip off unless you like bleak movies that will fuck you up. But don’t worry – there are a bunch of monkeys later on this list.![]()
7. True Grit
Yup. Another movie that the Swedish distributors thought was too risky to premiere 2010 until after the Oscars, because who wants to see a movie by the Coen brothers unless it receives 10 nominations?![]()
8. Les émotifs anonymes (Romantics Anonymous)
Yeah, sorry. Another one of them foreign films… And it premiered back home in baguette-land last year but it took Swedish distributors a year to notice that it was charming and French so they could claim that “Uh… It’s kind of like… Amelie?” which it’s not but it IS charming and French.![]()
9. Rise of the Planet of the Apes
I’m an Ape-fanboy. I like all the Planet of the Apes-movies – even the bad ones – and can rewatch them anytime. Well, I can’t see Tim Burton’s version because that was barely a movie. It was closer to being water boarded. “Rise of” is a remake of my second favorite in the series and manages to improve on that! And how the line “NO!” made me feel what it’s like to be Julian Assange on an assumed date (I don’t dare to call it a “rape” because that is equally assumed and the word “rape” might come of as punny here). And Andy Serkis delivers once again!![]()
10. Bridesmaids
Andy Serkis is on a roll here as he once again straps on his motion capture suit and makes it look like women can be funny!

Happy movies. 2011 was the year that I finally decided to face up to Ingmar Bergman. And now I am hooked. I think it might be fatal!
Best gag about AIDS? – are you including the the new Ricky Gervais Life’s Too Short episode with Liam Neeson?
Great list.
Actually: Yes, I do and that AIDS-gag was great!
