Top Ten ABBA Reunion Rumors

June 26, 2011

Big time movie star Tom Hanks has a dream. He wants to reunite ABBA.

And why wouldn’t he? ABBA has sold 375 000 000 albums and is one of the world’s most talked about bands even though they dissolved back in 1982.

How serious his attempt is remains to be seen but band member Björn Ulveus looks forward to a call.

Whatever the answer, Tom Hanks is not the first to try and probably not the last. Ever since 1982 rumors of an ABBA reunion keeps popping up.

Here are my top ten rumors:

10. A rumor started in 2006 about collaboration between Madonna and half of ABBA; Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Agnetha Fältskog. A representative of Anni-Frid later denied it.

5. In 2004 record producer Billy Butt suggested ABBA reunite in support of the tsunami victims in South East Asia. The group refused. 4. In 2004 the rumor that ABBA was reuniting for the Eurovision Song Contest in Istanbul 2005. 30 years after their win with Waterloo in 1974.

All four members of ABBA appeared briefly in a special comedy video made for the interval act, entitled “Our Last Video Ever”.

Each of the four members of the group made a brief cameo role, as did others such as Cher and Rik Mayall and even Iron Maiden‘s Eddie.  However, the ABBA members did not reunite to sing.

3. In a 2010 interview in The Times Benny Andersson was quoted saying; “a reunion seem like a good idea”.

1. In the beginning of 2000 the band were offered $1,000,000,000 to do a reunion tour consisting of 100 concerts. Yup, that’s a billion dollars! But they turned it down.

So what does this list prove? Well, first of all Benny Andersson’s joke proves we Swedes sure are funny. Turning down a billion dollars also proves we have integrity.

Or maybe that we are stupid.

Didn’t Tom Hanks produce Mamma Mia! (the movie) even? So World War II movies and ABBA gets Gump’s juices flowing, huh?
