Janne the Director’s Favorite Rare Movies Top 100 List #83: The Swimmer (1968)
83. The Swimmer [DVD] (1968)
I know what you are thinking: Just when you thought I would only feature filth in this Top 100 I bring this classy film in. That’s only because I don’t live in India and I don’t know the difference between classes.
I can’t help thinking this is like a mix of Falling Down and the concept of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button – directed by Kurosawa. To me that sounds like a bad thing (or rather “bland thing”) but The Swimmer really works for me.
Even though it is metaphor heavy like a lying fisherman I just love it. Is he walking through his life from childhood, meeting the love of his life, work and friends or was it America?
I don’t know – both and none work for me.
Golgotha never looked this good.
