We have Beards so we know Movies! Review: The Expendables

August 24, 2010

the animated comedy series and blog lunki and sika - sika in a family guy angry monkey t-shirtLast night I went to see the action movie The Expendables. And it truly had everything I wanted and hoped I would get:

The Action Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Randy Coutore, Steve Austin and Gary Daniels. Add a cameo with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis and I guess the only two missing would be Steven Seagal and Jean Claude Van Damme. But I didn’t miss them.

The Dialogue. Not great. At all. The emotional scene with Mickey Rourke was great though. I could however have done without the constant close-up of him frothing at the side of his mouth.

The one-liners. Weird yet funny. If said in anything other than an action movie would be just strange. But the muscular sweaty guys pull them off. Especially Dolph Lundgren.

Great action sequences. A lot more hardcore than I remember from Stallone’s action movies from the 80′s. i.e. less like Tango & Cash and more like the latest Rambo.

A Love Story. Yes, there is one. And in my opinion a totally unnecessary one. It does however result in a great Jason Statham kicking some ass scene. So maybe not totally unnecessary.

The Bad Guy. I loved Eric Roberts in Runaway Train but haven’t really seen him repeating that great performance since. He is a perfect bad guy though. Looks like one. Acts like one. And according to sister Julia Roberts is one.

The funny sidekick. Well, maybe not a sidekick, but Jet Li really made me laugh a bunch of times. And props to him for playing a funny Jackie Chan kind of character.

It’s a 104 minutes of action packed fun. And as someone wrote in a review on imdb; It’s Sex and the City.. for men.
